The black teardrop – A tribute to Giulietta Masina. Acrylic painting on aluminium and wood, 40 W x 47 H x 0.1D cm.
This unique, original artwork was inspired by the ending of Fellini’s classic masterpiece “Nights of Cabiria”, starring Giulietta Masina. She has been betrayed, robbed, and pushed to the edge of despair. A single black tear (her running mascara) slides down her cheek. Yet as she walks home through the night, a group of joyful young people suddenly surrounds her with music and laughter. Against all odds her face breaks into that fragile, radiant smile. The two Greek theater masks (laughing and crying) presented here as one!
Nights of Cabiria won Academy Award and were described as inspired by Masina’s humanity, whereas Giulietta won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress.
Rigid black Op Art stripes on white aluminium plates create intense optical pulse, which on the deep crimson background give pure cinematic power. Minimalist and emotionally devastating.
Varnished to be protected from discoloration, moisture and UV rays.
